He added a crucial fourth-quarter touchdown pass to Jason Witten and led the Cowboys to a fourth-quarter comeback win against a team that had beaten them by a combined 100 points in their last two meetings.

After the Cowboys’ win, Prescott told reporters, “We’ve still got a long way to go as an offense and as a team, as a defense as well, so we’ve still got a lot of work to do.”

It turned out they were correct, but it wasn’t enough to beat Tom Brady and the reigning Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday, as the Cowboys were defeated 31-29 by Ryan Succop’s 36-yard field goal with two seconds remaining.
Prescott’s performance was remarkable, though not unexpected, given that it was his first live action in 11 months, after a dislocation and complex fracture of his right ankle and a training camp in which he was restricted by a strained latissimus muscle in his right shoulder.
The Cowboys were in position for Greg Zuerlein’s go-ahead 48-yard field goal with 1:24 to play following Prescott’s 31-yard pass on third and 11 on the play after the two-minute warning, but Brady matched Prescott’s brilliance with greatness of his own.
Prescott threw for 403 yards, tying his career best in completions (42) and attempts (58), while also throwing for three touchdowns and one interception. It was his eighth career game with at least 400 passing yards, and his fourth in his past six starts.

The Cowboys’ formula of throwing so much may not be the greatest. Prescott is currently 4-11 in games when he tosses 40 or more passes.
Prescott made his first appearance on the field at 5:54 p.m. ET, going through what is now a standard warmup for his surgically repaired right ankle, as well as his usual hip-thrusting and shoulder-twisting routines. He couldn’t stay still during pregame warmups, so he walked side to side, glad-handing teammates and burning anxious energy.
He looked the same in the game as he did in 2020 when he was healthy.
In the first half, he tried a personal-best 32 passes. Only Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs threw more passes before halftime last season, with 33 against the Buccaneers in Week 12. He had 47 throw attempts at the conclusion of the third quarter, the most by any quarterback in a game since Aaron Rodgers in Week 7 against the Chicago Bears in 2016, when Mike McCarthy was his Green Bay Packers coach.
Amari Cooper caught his first pass for 28 yards. Prescott responded by completing all seven of his throws for 75 yards, ending in a 22-yard touchdown pass to Lamb on a double move, after the Buccaneers grabbed a 7-0 lead on a 94-yard drive.
He delivered the first of his two touchdown passes to Cooper in the second quarter, scooping up a low snap from Tyler Biadasz and calmly sending a ball to the pylon for Cooper. Prescott’s first run, a 7-yard gain on a broken play, came on the previous play.
Prescott proved he could still take a hit on the third play of the second half, when he was sacked by Ndamukong Suh while completing a first-down throw to Cooper on a drive that ended in a field goal. Later in the drive, offensive coordinator Kellen Moore ordered a quarterback goal-to-goal run for Prescott, who was able to avoid the Buccaneers’ rush.
On a night when the Cowboys were without their best offensive lineman, right guard Zack Martin, who is on the reserve/COVID-19 list, he was only sacked once.
When a long pass to Lamb bounced off Lamb’s hands and into the hands of Carlton Davis, he got his first opening-day interception in six games.

Prescott overcame two offensive line holding penalties to set up Zuerlein’s kick, found Lamb for the game’s biggest play, then connected Cooper for a 10-yard gain to put the Cowboys in field goal range.
Prescott’s night resembled 2020 in many respects. Brady put up big statistics, but the Cowboys still lost because the defense couldn’t hold on to the lead despite Brady’s heroics.
He attempted at least 39 passes in each of the first four games. In Weeks 2-4, he passed for 450, 472, and 502 yards in three consecutive games, with eight touchdowns and three interceptions, until his season ended against the New York Giants on Oct. 11, 2020. When he was injured, he was on track to pass for over 6,000 yards.
After being injured, he had two surgeries, went through hours of rehab, signed a $160 million contract in March, and was plagued by concerns about his shoulder after pulling out of a July 28 practice.
Even if he and the Cowboys had never been asked any questions, he answered them all on Thursday.
