After supporters were found guilty of racist behavior at Euro 2020, Uefa forced Hungary to play three home games behind closed doors.
Racism and other forms of discrimination are alleged.
However, since the event is within Fifa’s authority, home supporters were permitted inside the 67,000-seat Puskas Arena in Budapest for the match versus England.
When Sterling opened the score for England, he was attacked with paper cups and bottles, and a flare was thrown onto the field after Harry Maguire put the visitors up 3-0.
During his post-match interview with Radio 5 Live, England manager Gareth Southgate was pelted with ice by supporters. “I’ve heard allegations of bigotry,” he added, “which I didn’t hear during the game.”

“We will request that Fifa examine the situation. We will continue to support the players and staff in their efforts to raise awareness of and combat prejudice in all forms.”
Kick It Out’s CEO, Tony Burnett, has asked Fifa to investigate as soon as possible.
“The behavior of some Hungary supporters shocked Kick It Out,” he added.
“We gladly back England’s players and staff, who have once again behaved with courage, grace, and integrity in the face of bigotry that has no place in our game or society.”
“This isn’t the first time something like this has happened in Hungary, therefore we ask Fifa to look into it right away.”
“Those responsible must be held accountable, and measures must be done to prevent situations like this from occurring again.”
“I personally didn’t hear it [the racist comments]; I’ve been informed about it later,” England defender John Stones, who earned his 50th cap in Budapest, said.
“It’s really terrible to think that this occurs during our games, and I hope that whomever is responsible for it does so, which I’m certain they will.”
“We remain together as a team, and we will continue to fight for what we think is right and what we believe is right as a team.”
Manchester City player Jack Grealish stated after the game on Twitter: “In an unfavorable environment, a brilliant victory was achieved. But, kudos to the lads.”
Earlier in the game, England’s players were booed when they took a knee to protest racism before kick-off.
Before the match, Hungary’s players and head coach Marco Rossi urged fans to appreciate England’s gesture, but the message went unheeded.
“It’s a wall of uproar here as England players take a knee,” Radio 5 Live’s Ferrington remarked.
“They [fans] booed throughout the moment, led mainly by the ultras behind the goal, despite pleas from the manager, players, and national officials not to overstep the mark.”
“That’s really disappointing,” says the narrator.
After events occurred in each of Hungary’s Euro 2020 group games against Portugal, France, and Germany in June, Uefa launched an investigation.
When questioned about the possibility of racism and homophobia being shown during the match, Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate said England should “get its own house in order” before criticizing others’ behavior.
Racist incidents marred two of England’s Euro 2020 qualifying matches. The match between Bulgaria and England in October 2019 was twice stopped due to racist crowd behavior, whereas racist shouting was aimed at numerous England players in England’s away encounter against Montenegro the previous March.
