The United States Federal Government announced Thursday morning (Oct. 21) that it had bought the Wu-Tang Clan’s unreleased album, Once Upon A Time in Shaolin, from previous owner and now-disgraced pharmaceuticals CEO Martin Shkreli. According to the article, the record that Shkreli bought in 2015 is now controlled by Crypto group PleasrDAO, who bought the secret album for $4 million dollars from several parties.

The album was purchased by the US Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York in July, but PleasrDAO didn’t get it until September and has been keeping the news under wraps in an unidentified New York City vault. The group of purchasers, which also includes an anonymous entity, intends to release the album, but must first get official consent from RZA and Cilvaringz, the record’s producers.

Shkreli purchased the record for $2 million dollars in 2015. Following his conviction for securities fraud in 2017, he lost ownership of the album and was sentenced to seven years in jail. PleasrDAO published a video announcement of the album’s acquisition yesterday, as seen above.

Once Upon a Time in Shaolin will be the Wu-Tang Clan’s seventh studio album to be released. According to sources, the double album is only available in one copy. The album was started in 2000 and took six years to complete with Cilvaringz as the producer and RZA’s supervision. “It was a suitable moment to perform what it did from the time the idea existed,” RZA told Business Insider in 2019. “I am adamantly opposed to the devaluation of music, and I am adamantly opposed to the sense of entitlement that people have toward music.” That campaign was both a political and an artistic investigation of it. Now, how it came up in that dude’s hands and all that, I’d do it all over again because that’s the Wu tale. Wu-Tang also has its own mythology. This wasn’t something that was discussed in our area. We debated it between ourselves, but even after that, it continues across the world. As a result, I believe it was something really unique and valuable to the Wu-Tang tradition.”
