Fitzpatrick will be 39 years old this season, but his job has been elevated from what it was last year. Despite his excellent performance, he spent 2020 with the Miami Dolphins as a placeholder for Tua Tagovailoa. Fitzpatrick went 4-3 in his first start in Miami, and he was surprisingly effective. As he seems to be following the Tom Brady method to growing older, his 68.5 completion percentage was the highest of his career. He’s just getting better as he gets older.

The match with the Washington Redskins is almost ideal. A defensive club with offensive weapons that got a jump start on its reconstruction and is now roughly a year away from getting things rolling. Meanwhile, Washington can challenge for the playoffs once again this season, this time with true quarterback consistency. Don’t get me wrong, Alex Smith was a good fill-in last season, but the position lacked consistency and stability, so this should be a welcome addition.

Despite what seems to be a good match for Fitzpatrick and the club, he is still being expected to accomplish a lot more than he has in his career so far. Fitzpatrick hasn’t played a full 16-game season since 2015, when he was with the Jets and finished 10-6. Fitzpatrick has started 41 games in the five seasons since then, averaging slightly over eight starts each season. In his 39th season, he’s being expected to take on a lot.

This is such an odd position in general. Normally, a club in the position that the Washington Football Team was in this offseason would select a quarterback, but they didn’t have a pick early enough since they reached the playoffs. With Taylor Heinicke behind him, Ryan Fitzpatrick has been given the starting position. Fitzpatrick is the starter for the first few games, thus there is no rookie backup waiting in the wings. For better or worse, this is his offense to run. Needless to say, it will be fascinating to watch what Fitzpatrick can do with the Washington Football Team this season.
