SEATTLE (AP) — Russell Wilson was as forthright as he’s ever been earlier this summer when he pressed the Seattle Seahawks to improve his pass-protection. Wilson is once again speaking openly about the necessity of having his best offensive lineman back on the field, despite the fact that Pro Bowl left tackle Duane Brown is not practicing as he pursues a new contract.
Wilson made no effort to minimize Brown’s prolonged absence in his first remarks to Seattle-area media since the start of training camp.
Wilson said after the Seahawks’ simulated game at Lumen Field on Sunday, “Not having Duane Brown out there is a fairly big thing because I believe he’s one of the greatest left tackles in the game, there’s no debating that.” “I believe he is the best there is. He is the most athletic and talented person I’ve ever met. Age is nothing more than a number. He seems to be in his late twenties or thirties out there. He’s really remarkable. To be honest with you, I believe people fear him when they’re rushing him and playing against him because he’s so clever and strong and knows the game.
“So we’d want to be able to get him back out there as soon as possible. We have to figure it out because Duane Brown is required.”
Brown has yet to get a new contract, according to sources who spoke to ESPN’s Adam Schefter earlier this week. He is in the last year of his deal, which pays him up to $11.35 million this season. Later this month, the 14-year veteran will turn 36.
The Seahawks have five weeks before their season opener against the Indianapolis Colts on September 12th, which gives them plenty of time to finalize a deal. The problem is that they’re attempting to extend Pro Bowl safety Jamal Adams’ deal, which is their main priority right now.
Wilson first dodged a question about when Brown’s absence would become a problem for him. When pushed, he said that they need his services for their first game.
Wilson remarked, “We need to find it out because he’s very unique.” “As I have said, I believe he is one of the greatest left tackles in the league. I believe he has a few more years left in him. I believe he is capable of doing the task. I don’t believe anybody is more athletic than him. You can see what he’s capable of. He’s also our commander. He’s a player that really leads and controls the offensive line, and he has the ability to set the tone.”
Last season, Brown was second in ESPN’s pass block victory rate as a tackle (94 percent), and he’s been sixth since 2018. (92.7 percent ). He played in all 16 games in 2018 and 2020, missing four in 2019 due to knee and biceps ailments.
Brown, like Adams, is participating in a “hold-in,” in which they have reported to training camp but are not exercising due to a lack of new contracts. Coach Pete Carroll indicated last weekend that Brown should start practicing shortly, but that hasn’t happened yet. Carroll didn’t say when he’ll practice on Sunday.
When questioned whether Brown is dissatisfied, he replied, “Duane and I are doing fine.” “He’s been fantastic in our discussions on many topics. He’s trying to make a point. He’s making a statement about what he believes he needs.”
Carroll said he doesn’t know whether Brown will miss any games when asked if he believes he will “He will not play in the preseason. He wasn’t going to do it anyhow, so it doesn’t matter right now.”
The Seahawks were without Brown’s top two backups on Sunday, in addition to him. Jamarco Jones (back spasms) and Cedric Ogbuehi (biceps strain) were both injured and had to leave Saturday’s practice. Tommy Champion (groin) was also unable to participate due to injury. Stone Forsythe, a rookie sixth-round selection, was thrust into action as Seattle’s starting left tackle as a result.
Jones’ back will need a few of days to relax up, according to Carroll. He had no idea when Ogbuehi would return. They were also missing top center Ethan Pocic on Sunday after he exacerbated a hamstring issue that had kept him out of camp since the beginning. Carroll believes he will need a few more days to recover.
According to Carroll, the Seahawks were able to complete their simulated game without any major injuries. He stated they kept running back Rashaad Penny (thigh) and cornerback D.J. Reed (groin) out of the game as precautionary, but that their ailments were minor.
