Queen Elizabeth II has praised the performance of tennis player Emma Raducanu in her first-ever US Open final.
Emma Raducanu won the US Open on Monday night, becoming the first Romanian woman to win a Grand Slam title in tennis. The Queen of England congratulated her on Twitter, saying she was outstanding.
Emma Raducanu, 18, won the US Open championship with a surprising win in New York, and the Queen was among the first to congratulate her.
Raducanu defeated Leylah Fernandez, a fellow teenager, 6-4 6-3 to end Britain’s 44-year wait for a Grand Slam singles winner.
The Queen replied, “I offer my congratulations on your achievement.”
“At such a young age, it is a fantastic accomplishment that is a testimony to your hard work and commitment.”
“I have no doubt your excellent performance, as well as that of your opponent Leylah Fernandez, will inspire the future generation of tennis players,” the king said in a statement.
“What a fantastic contest!” UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson tweeted. Emma Raducanu deserves a lot of compliments.
“You displayed exceptional talent, composure, and bravery, and we are all very proud of you.”

Raducanu has been dubbed “a future global number one” and “a star born.”
Raducanu is the first Romanian to win a Grand Slam since Maria Sharapova in 2004.
The last British woman to win a Grand Slam singles championship was Virginia Wade, who was there at Arthur Ashe Stadium to watch Raducanu’s victory. Wade won Wimbledon in 1977.
Raducanu became the first qualifier to win a major and did it without losing a set in an incredible run.
Martina Navratilova, a tennis great, remarked, “A star is born.” “Emma Raducanu is making history, and she’s just beginning.”
Greg Rusedski, a former British number one, told Amazon Prime: “She is going to be a multi-Grand Slam champion, a global number one.”
“She’s the genuine thing, and seeing an 18-year-old win the race is a breath of new air.”
Raducanu, who reached the fourth round of Wimbledon earlier this summer, will get £1.8 million in prize money and will move up from 150th to 23rd in the global rankings.
Pat Cash, a former Wimbledon winner, called her achievement “mindboggling.”
On Radio 5 Live, the Australian stated, “This [a qualifier winning a Grand Slam] is something I never could have imagined would happen.”
“I believe I am about to awaken. It’s really incredible. It’s incredible to see this performance.”
“She will win more of them [Grand Slams], she is that brilliant,” said Tim Henman, another ex-British number one who was courtside in his job working for Amazon.
“This isn’t a fantasy or a flash in the pan. She is a ‘top-five tennis player.’
“Her life will be flipped upside down, but she has wonderful people around her, and if she can remain injury-free, it will be a wild trip.”
Raducanu has taken over the UK, with ‘Delay MOTD!’ and discreetly checking scores at weddings.
Raducanu won the championship with a polished performance in a high-stakes encounter against Fernandez of Canada that lasted almost two hours.
By the conclusion, it seemed to have captivated the UK, with many people tweeting to request that Match of the Day be postponed.
“First time in my life I’ve ever tweeted while on live,” said presenter Gary Lineker, “but my god what a performance, what a victory, what a wonderful young lady.”
